Curiosity and Questioning 

A series of Saturday online workshops focussing on curiosity and questioning is happening this August and September. You can participate in these interactive workshops from the comfort of your home. 

We are excited to bring you a workshop series on curiosity and questioning. Join us as we take a deep dive into the heart of asking questions to provoke children's curiosity and deepen their learning. This series is perfect for educators starting out with inquiry-based learning, but will also benefit experienced educators. 

We will look at everyday experiences, learning environments and contexts that lend themselves to intentional explorations. While the explorations are intentional from the educators’ perspective, we will discuss how to respond to children’s learning in theses contexts in order to extend and further explore with the children. Discussions of teachers’ behaviours, questioning and learning contexts will challenge us further in our practices of using children’s curiosities in the classroom to support their literacy development.

Participants will be able to use these workshops to: 

  • Challenge children's curiosity and interests as a provocation for
  • Consider learning contexts as a space for provoking and challenging children’s curiosities
  • Reflect on how teachers engage with children while exploring including using the art of listening, the practices of silence, questioning and commenting
  • Learn different ways to spark and scaffold children’s curiosity with questions

At the conclusion of each workshop, participants will have the opportunity to join a closed Facebook group which will enable us to continue our learning as a community and extend our own research and questions. The group will enable us to try the strategies presented in the workshops in our classrooms and then share the results enabling us all to learn with and from each other.

Tania Lattanzio

M Ed (Curriculum and Administration), Grad Dip (Librarianship), Dip Ed

Tania Lattanzio is an experienced international educator. Previously a teacher, coordinator, and manager with the International Baccalaureate, she is now Director of Innovative Global Education. In this role she works as an educational consultant throughout the world.

This role involves developing and conducting professional development for teachers and leadership, modelling pedagogy in classrooms and working intensively with teaching teams, through mentoring and coaching, to improve planning, teaching and assessment.

A key focus of Tania's work is developing and designing conceptual curriculum for schools, this work involves conceptualizing curriculum across subject areas and year levels. Included in this is equipping teachers with ideas and strategies to ensure that the learning students are involved in has a conceptual focus.

An advocate of inquiry, she works with educators to provide students with an education that is purposeful, meaningful and relevant to their lives, where students have opportunities to be motivated and have agency of their own learning.

A passionate educator, Tania works closely with educational institutions to specifically meet their needs through supporting school reform, making significant shifts in pedagogy and developing conceptual curriculum frameworks in both local and international settings. Tania has worked with schools and teachers from early childhood through to high school.

Workshop One: 

Provoking Curiosity and Inquiry - Setting the Scene

Saturday, 1 Aug 2020

9.00am to 12.30pm (1.5 hours + 30 minute break + 1.5 hours)

How can we organize our environment to provoke in children the natural wonder they have?

This session will look at the role of the environment in provoking curiosity and wonderment, as a way for children to ask questions and develop theories. It will examine the role of ‘environment’ and ‘provocations’ as a way to promote curiosity and wonderment.

Participants will be able to engage in small groups to examine videos, photos and provocations.

Workshop Two:

Questioning and Theorizing -  Making Sense of the World

9.00am to 1.30pm (2 hours + 30 minute break + 2 hours)

How do we organize learning around children’s questions and theories?

Children continually theorise and question to construct meaning and make sense of the world. This session will look at how we can respond to these theories and questions. It will examine what theories and questions are and how the role of listening is key to this. We will look at how to plan in response to children’s questions and theories in order for children to make sense of their world. 

Participants will have the opportunity to join small groups that will respond to scenarios enabling practice of the content outlined in this session.

How do we organize learning around children’s questions and theories?

This session will look at the role of teacher’s questioning. It will examine different types of questions and what questions promote deeper thinking in children. It will connect the importance of listening and observing to understand what questions to ask.
